브리넬 경도기는 강구로 재료를 강하게 눌러 시험체 표면에 시험편에 구상(球狀)의 압입 자국을 만드는 장비이다. 하중을 압입 자국의 직경으로부터 구한 압입 자국의 표면적으로 표면적으로 나눈 값을 산출한다.
